Personal Development Plan

Week 1

The first week of my personal development plan was dedicated to analysing my current artistic abilities, overall character. I created a mind map which included a list of my current skills, character strengths and weaknesses, as well as potential career opportunities after college.

I found out that going forward I do not want stay in my comfort zone and want to dip my toes in many different potential creative jobs and acquiring new skills. I enjoy drawing and painting but do not want to develop these skills much further, rather apply them in different career paths. I believe that over my eight years of art school I have acquired a good foundation in fine arts but now would like to become proficient in graphic design software during the three years of further education. I always had a great passion for films. All of my best childhood memories are about films almost nothing

Week 3

The third week of my personal development plan was mostly spent reading, delving into the graphic design industry. While researching my essay topic I read Cipe Pineles' book "Leave me alone with the recipes" which detailed the career of the renowned designer as well as provided with an insight into the graphic design industry - how it changed in terms of inclusivity and creative and business methods. Jaclyn Larsen’s college thesis "Finding Female Recognition: A Career Comparison of Female and Male Graphic Designers" gave a pretty detailed overview of what the graphic design industry is like today, highlighted many issues still prevalent today. I listened to audiobook version of "48 laws of power". Infamous self-help book providing tips and examples to becoming a more powerful and influential individual.

Week 4

The first week of my personal development plan was dedicated to analysing my current artistic abilities, overall character. I created a mind map which included a list of my current skills, character strengths and weaknesses, as well as potential career opportunities after college.

Jessica Walsh is an American designer, art director, illustrator, educator, previously a partner of the design studio Sagmeister & Walsh, and the founder of the creative agency &Walsh, which notably is among the 0.1 % of creative companies founded by women.

I admire her career. In terms of career trajectory she is someone I aspire to follow. There are not a lot of women in the graphic design industry who managed to rise to the higher positions because the senior and leader roles are still primarily male-dominated. So, it was interesting to explore how Walsh managed to do it, to see what characteristics, and career moves I could replicate to be successful in the design world.

Sagmeister & Walsh is a NYC based design firm that creates identities, commercials, websites, apps, films, books and objects.

In 2015 she founded a global non-profit organisation called Ladies, Wine & Design. The aim of the organisation is to see more diversity in the creative industry, especially within leadership roles.
