For this exercise I created a RSS Feed Logo following a detailed tutorial. After opening and naming a new document in Illustrator I created a 70mm x 70mm rectangle with an orange fill. I created gradient effect across the shape using the Window -> Gradient function. Also, added a stroke which had a gradient effect from light to darker orange as well. The biggest difficulty that I encountered doing this exercise was creating the shape inside the rectangle. According to the tutorial, I had to draw a circle shape, then, with Direct Selection Tool select only the bottom and left points of the circle, deleting them, and this way creating the desired arc shape. Unfortunately, even when following the instructions, my shape would not end up looking like the one in the tutorial. Because I could not figure out a way of fixing this problem, I temporarily put aside this exercise and came back to it when I learned another way of cropping objects from another Digital Applications Tutorial. This time I created a circle shape, drew two rectangles over it, using Pathfinder Intersect function I created the wanted shape. Admittedly, it might not be the best way of creating the shape but it is the only way that was successful to me. I also tried other ways of creating the shape, for example, using the warp tool, but these methods did not end up being as precise or effective. The rest of the tutorial was very understandable and simple. I did not have any more difficulties. After creating the three inside objects, I added a grey-white gradient fill with a 1pt light grey stroke. Finally, I created a white reflection across half of the logo, again, using the Intersect Shape Area option in Pathfinder. All in all, I found this exercise to be pretty simple and a very great introduction to Illustrator for a beginner. I learned some of the necessary basics of using Illustrator, like creating and cutting out and filling shapes, creating a stroke.
Success:
The final image looks very similar to the example. I also learned a lot from the tutorial which made me familiar with some basic but essential Illustrator functions like filling in a Gradient and cutting out objects, creating round corners.
Fail:
The curved lines inside the logo are slightly uneven, different in width. I had some trouble cutting them out thus the imperfect result.
